Things to do if your phone is lost!

In today’s world a lost phone feels like the end of the world, but it can also be a huge security risk if you have private or company data on it.  The good news is there are steps that can be taken to help protect yourself.

  • First, ensure the phone is really lost and not just misplaced.  One of the best tools for this is, if you have a modern smart phone, is to log into the find my iPhone or Android device manager and check the GPS to see if its near you.  If it is near you, you can set it to send a constant tone which is easier than calling it several times.  If the phone is not near you or is off, see step 2.
  • Lock the phone from that same find my iPhone or android device manager site.  Once the phone is locked you can place a lock-screen message on it to let whoever has the phone know that you are looking for it. You can add some contact information which may lead to you getting your phone back.
  • Once that is done you will still want to change your passwords on any accounts that may have been logged into on that device just to be safe.  If you have a work email on that phone you can also contact your IT provider to have them assist in wiping email from the phone or you can do a full phone wipe from the device management website I spoke about earlier.
  • Once you reach that stage you will want to contact your phone provider and let them know the phone is missing so that they can disable the sim card and help prevent your phone number from being used by someone else.
